Our Story

Over the past 35 years we have been a church that has sought to love God, love others and make disciples of Jesus Christ. We’ve done this by gathering in friendship and family, growing in character and gifting and going in mission and service. Here is a short history of some of the key moments in our story.

1986

Our journey begins as Norwich Community Church (NCC) with leadership from Trevor Hopley and Pete Farley. Trevor and his wife Hazel are still part of the King’s church family.

1988

We begin linking with the New Frontiers family of churches who send Henry and Dorothy Tyler to lead us.

1989

Graham and Sue Hall along with Goff and Angie Hope join the church leadership team.

1991

Graham Hall, Goff Hope and Graham Barwick become elders.

1993

Our administration and smaller meetings start taking place in St. Edmunds Fishergate which we refurbished and called ‘Fishergate Christian Centre’.

Henry and Dorothy Tyler moved on from King’s and Goff Hope came on staff.

1994

Our Sunday meetings move to St. Andrew’s Hall.

1995

We take on the redevelopment of St Saviour’s Church in Magdalen St. This work is completed in 1997 and is renamed ‘The Gate’. This was a Youth Venue.

1997

Having raised £120,000 in a matter of weeks we purchased the ‘Norwich Lads’ Club’ in King Street. We then began meeting there on Sundays.

2001

King’s Care started as an outworking of us caring for the poor and the most vulnerable in the city. This is still running to this day.

2002

We change our name from Norwich Community Church to King’s Community Church. The development of the King’s Centre frontage is completed with the opening of a coffee shop. Graham and Sue Hall move to start Gateway Church, Ashford. Jim Drew, Andy Hopley, Toby Skipper and Marcus Tutt are brought in as new elders.

2009

We start a site meeting in Mile Cross on Sundays and investing into the local community of Mile Cross.

2010

Stuart Jones and Simon Oldfield are brought in as elders.

2012

We join the Relational Mission family of churches – a part of the wider New Frontiers family of churches.

2015

We start a site meeting on Sundays called City West meeting at St. Peter’s Methodist Church, Park Lane.

2019

Paul Hatton and Steve Hope become elders.

City West moves to be in the heart of the West Earlham area, meeting at West Earlham Junior School.

We’re excited about all that God has in store for us in the coming 35 years. If you’d like to find out more about King’s Community Church then the best way is to join us for a Sunday gathering. Find out more here.
