Be Before You Do

(Sunday Preaching Series)

It has been said that Jesus was really busy but never hurried, so of course the obvious question is... how?! In this preaching series we'll be looking at some of the often overlooked ancient spiritual practices like solitude, silence and sabbath, that are designed to help us, like Jesus, slow down so we can be before we do.

Solitude (Matthew 14)

Listen again as Tom Shaw explores Matthew 14 and suggests 2 reasons why Jesus seemed to prioritise solitude in one rather eventful day, because solitude helps us:
1. Process our inner world (especially in the context of pain)
2. Guard our God-given identity (especially in the context of pressure/’success’)

Slow up to Grow Up (Galatians 5:22)

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to live at a constant rush—moving from one thing to the next, yet rarely feeling truly present? listen again as Toby Skipper explores a different way of living: a slower, deeper, more Christ-shaped pace of life. Not a withdrawal from responsibility or reality, but a way of being that stays grounded, attentive, and loving even in the middle of pressure, provocation and pain.

Mary and Martha (Luke 10: 38-42)

Tom Shaw begins our new series with a deep dive into the story of Mary and Martha. We see Jesus challenge Martha and encourage Mary. Whilst Martha was ‘worried and distracted by many things’ Mary was praised for ‘sitting…listening’ and choosing the ‘one thing necessary.’ The gentle challenge is when Martha’s ‘voice’ dominates, to the exclusion of Mary's.
