What are Running Partners?
Running Partners are simply three or four friends who agree together that they will "run the race" intentionally together. This refers to 1 Cor 9:24: "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it". Running Partners agree together that they will support each other as they run!
“If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” David Gergen
5 GOOD REASONS TO RUN TOGETHER (WITH GOOD FRIENDS)
Before you go any further read Ecclesiastes chapter 4 verses 9 to 12
1...WE’RE MORE EFFECTIVE TOGETHER – V9
The simple fact is that we are less effective in life when we try to go it alone. Whether as a spouse, parent, friend, employee or student, we will be more effective, more successful & increasingly fruitful when we journey through this life with good friends at our side.
"There are no words to express the abyss between isolation and having one ally. It may be conceded to the mathematician that four is twice two. But two is not twice one; two is two thousand times one." G.K. Chesterton
2...WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER WHEN WE FALL – V10
We need good friends around us who help us when we fall, fail or face mountains. We need people who pray for us, encourage us and listen to us when we feel like giving up, going back & dropping out. Who help us get back on our feet and keep running the race that God has set before us. (Hebrews 12:1) Don’t forget this sober warning, ‘someone who falls alone is in real trouble’ (V10)
3...WE BENEFIT FROM THE RESOURCES OF FRIENDS – V11
Sleeping out on the side of a road during a long journey was dangerous. Not least because the temperature would drop and hypothermia became a real threat. To help someone recover, the healthy, warm & glowing person is encouraged to share a sleeping bag with the cold, sick & dying person. Sometimes we need to get alongside each other and draw from the encouragement, prayers, wisdom, guidance and faith of others to help us keep moving in the right direction.
4...WE CAN WATCH EACH OTHER’S BACKS – V12
Follow Jesus and you make an enemy of Satan. (OK, so he hated you before but now its war!) Being on your own means you are vulnerable. Peter writes “Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (1Peter 5:8) You’ll do much better standing with good friends against the ‘schemes of Satan’ (Ephesians 6:11) than you will on your own.
5...WE FIND STRENGTH TOGETHER – V12B “A CORD OF 3 STRANDS IS NOT EASILY BROKEN”
What’s better than two? Three! When I’m part of a group of three or four good friends who know me well, that I am honest with & accountable to then greater strength will come into my life. I am better able to do what I need to do, face what I need to face & take steps of faith that I might have otherwise bottled out of.
